At first glance, the majestic bronze sculptures James Stewart has on display at his booth at the Calgary Stampede art show may seem to have little to do with the prawns of District 9. The prawn was just one of many creations Stewart has developed for the silver screen. He also designed fantastic creatures and beasts for Narnia and Harry Potter films. But a few years back, the artist decided to focus on his own work, including the western themed horse sculptures on display right now at the BMO Centre as part of the Stampedes Western Showcase. While it may seem as if the hands on bronze work has little to do with the computer generated visual effects he did for the movies, Stewart says theres more than a little overlap. It was all character based art, which translates directly to this, says Stewart, in an interview on Stampede grounds. Youd be surprised at how directly the parallels are to sculpting on the computer to sculpting in real life. Really, its a completely transferrable skill from one medium to another.
