THDR, and the gameplay is much closer to the original game. Moves and combos are still easier to pull off but none of the other changes seem to have been carried through. And there are certainly none of the myriad of options and DIP switch settings to fiddle with that made SSF2. THDR such a playground for Street Fighter nerds. Thats fair enough you might think, this is Capcoms first release on the very casual friendly Switch, but there isnt even a speed select option. Which is the point at which you realise its probably not been left out in the interests of user friendliness, but laziness. When it comes to unique additions to Ultra Street Fighter II, the most obvious is two new characters Evil Ryu and Violent Ken. Both have been in games before, and theyre clearly just minor variations of the original two heroes, but they do play quite differently and are a reasonable novelty for fans. And the answer is theyre actually fine. There are six action buttons, and although you have to use an analogue stick the more relaxed move timings compensate for that. We do advise you use the wrist straps though, as they make the shoulder buttons much easier to get at. So there you have it Ultra Street Fighter II really is just the original game, with most of what is new being largely unwanted. If money is no object and you really want to play Street Fighter II on a park bench with your friends then this is a perfectly acceptable version. But otherwise just go back to Street Fighter V, or wait for the next remaster. Because somehow we doubt these are really the final challengers.
