Through two seasons, The Affair charted a course between melodrama and comedy of manners, with a ticky tacky mystery thrown in to keep the plot percolating. Season 3, so far, has been different a little less ripe, a little more serious. The seasons third episode began with a chapter that felt like a French film set among the haute bourgeoisie appropriate for the point of view of Juliette, the visiting professor of medieval literature and ended with a chapter that played like a chilly psychological thriller, with Noah scanning the streets for the prison guard who he thinks is stalking him. Is this quieter approach an improvementPersonally, I could have used more Furkat. The episode brought us back to what appears to be this seasons present, a few months after Noahs release from prison. Mystery Thriller Movies Noah ' title='Mystery Thriller Movies Noah ' />The Juliette chapter recapitulated the day we saw from Noahs point of view in the premiere, and for the first time this season we got to play Spot the Differences. In Noahs telling, he had worn his lumberjack look open necked plaid shirt to Juliettes dinner party in hers, he sported a professorial shirt and tie. Noah had heard Juliette cite medieval courtly love as an arena in which women took charge Juliette heard her student Audrey use it as an example of male oppression. Noah had recalled being led upstairs by Juliette for Juliette, he was upstairs already, waiting. And this time, when he broke away from their kiss and left, there was no train whistle and no lights in his eyes. Im going to go with Juliette on this and assume that those were the product of his overheated imagination. The greater impact of the chapter in an episode written by the playwright David Henry Hwang was to fill out the character of Juliette, who we now know has the full Affair complement of angst. No one gets to be happy but Furkat. We learned that her husband, a famous medievalist who had been her professor, was succumbing to dementia back in France, which cast her visit to America as an escape and her desire for Noah as more complicated than pure albeit intellectualized lust. We also learned that shes hooking up with Mike, one of her students, giving her a full menu of imperfect relationships guilty separation from her older husband, frustrated longing for Noah, her contemporary, and purely physical, loneliness assuaging sex with the 2. Mike. We were forced to sit through the dinner party again and listen to another version of the argument about consensuality and mandatory consent. The students certainties and self entitlement were just as cartoonlike in Juliettes view as they had been in Noahs, and perhaps thats the point were seeing the young people through jaded, middle aged eyes but its not very interesting. When we did see a new facet of one of the young characters, it was surprise Audreys admission that shes obsessed with having sex with Noah. Now, first of all this is taken from the internet. The second was when Juliette, having been ditched by the flesh and blood Noah, settled for sex against the kitchen counter with Mike, who was incongruously, hilariously completely naked. This weeks episode felt like a French film set among the haute bourgeoisie mixed with a chilly thriller. It made sense, actually, as a comment on how seriously he takes himself. My point of view the masturbation scene was embarrassing in a bad way, the kitchen sex scene was embarrassing in a good way. Finally, the Juliette chapter tied into the seasons mystery, illuminating the cryptic scene from the end of Episode 1.
